2020 has been an extraordinary year. Like many businesses, we have adapted to new ways of working, but our core purpose remains the same – to support the local business community.
We reached an important milestone this year. 1 April marked the start of Better Bankside’s fourth five-year term, following overwhelming endorsement from local businesses in the ballot last November (92% supporting a renewal). Our manifesto was built around three pillars: Resilient, Responsible, Revolutionary. We set out a vision for a Bankside that is resilient in uncertain climates. This year has been a true test of that.
This is our twentieth year of working closely with businesses and other community stakeholders to co-create a programme that benefits the whole neighbourhood. The AGM is an opportunity for members to comment on how well we have been doing in achieving that aspiration, and to discuss the shape of the programme going forward.
In recent months, changes to our programme have accelerated. A range of new initiatives, services and practical solutions have been developed and delivered in response to evolving business challenges.
We’ve introduced an enhanced cleaning regime across the neighbourhood, installed on-street hand sanitisers and creative distancing measures in Bankside’s streets and spaces and launched a new secure cycle park to accommodate increasing numbers of employees commuting by bike. At a time when employee wellbeing has never been more important, we’ve increased the frequency of our Mental Health First Aid training and launched a digital platform to enable Banksiders to connect remotely. We’ve rallied support for the hospitality sector and continue to represent local businesses as a strong unified voice, lobbying on important issues such as Business Rates and Government grants.
At the start of our new term, we extended our area of operation, welcoming more businesses into the Better Bankside community. In addition to our existing members we invite those new businesses to join us for the AGM. There is a simple process to become members of the company and this will allow you to vote at the AGM and stand for board and other positions in the company. These positions are unremunerated but offer an excellent opportunity to get involved in shaping our neighbourhood. Membership of Better Bankside is open to all BID levy payers, and for others at the discretion of the board.
We hope you will be able to join us for the AGM, held virtually for the first time. RSVP to Rahima Begum at email@example.com and you will be emailed a Zoom link to join. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
